One candy manufacturer in 19th century America would not hire a woman who was bare-headed or wore a shawl. If they had not adopted hats, they were insufficiently assimilated.

Norman chroniclers wrote of the shocking cruelty of the Forest Law and how entire villages were uprooted to create forest for games. When William Rufus was shot and killed while hunting in New Forest, it was regarded as divine judgment.
