One candy manufacturer in 19th century America would not hire a woman who was bare-headed or wore a shawl. If they had not adopted hats, they were insufficiently assimilated.

Marie Antoinette was packed off to France with an extremely expensive trousseau, every article of which had been French-made, in a carriage with glass panels for the front, back, and sides, and with every other inch covered with ornamentation in white, yellow, or rose gold, down to flowers nodding on the top. This came to a carefully manufactured building on the border, with a suite for each country on either side and a hall in the middle. In the hall, she was stripped naked. She could bring nothing with her, not even her beloved pet pug, though she managed, somehow, to conceal a watch her mother had given her. She saw some of those articles reappear at Versailles, on the ladies in waiting in charge of the stripping.

Sousa wrote Semper Fidelis because after the Marine Corps Band had played Hail to the Chief once too often for President Arthur's taste, he asked Sousa if he could come with up a new piece.

The first silent movies lacked credits, and imploring letters went unanswered, so the fans assigned nicknames to the stars to be able to talk about them.

When the gene for adult lactose tolerance first appeared in humanity, humans had already had ways to cope with making milk edible for many years. Where it first appeared -- Turkey -- for instance, if you left milk alone for a bit it would be yogurt, with a good chunk of that lactose fermented away. The gene nevertheless spread like wildfire, faster was believed possible before it was traced. This raised the little question of how drinking fresh milk could be such an advantage over just waiting a bit for it to ferment.

One immigrant boy was shocked when he had brought a bedbug along when a guests, and the hostess shouted at him that she had never had a bedbug in her house before. A house without bedbugs? Unimaginable! His mother reassured him that she was a snob, but he noticed thereafter she was making more efforts to keep home and clothes clean.

A New England farmer one day got a barometer, except that on a bright, sunshiny day, it was stuck as low as it went, predicting a storm. He headed out to the post office and mailed it back as broken. By the time he returned, the great hurricane of 1938 had washed his farm out to sea.

Anyone could attend Versailles, except that a man had to have a hat and sword. The palace concierge, however, rented those articles for the duration of a visit.

Norman chroniclers wrote of the shocking cruelty of the Forest Law and how entire villages were uprooted to create forest for games. When William Rufus was shot and killed while hunting in New Forest, it was regarded as divine judgment.

A Slovak woman was shocked. A servant of her had immigrated to America and wrote back that in America, she wore a hat.

That is bizarrely intriguing.

I sometimes think the awareness that such vermin were basically inescapable in the past should provide a calming perspective, but mostly, it doesn't work.
