into the void of the middle

I have the beginning of a story. The hero, a young man, is peripherally aware of something going on, involving a burglary with murder and theft in the backstory. Because of an accident, he's swept into the thick of things: he knows too much.
So, he slings on his pack and goes off with the boy whom he knew was involved and the older man who has reason to protect them.
Into --
a void.
The odd thing is that I have a notion of the very end, but the middle is vacuity.
Perhaps the villains will come clearer as I outline the opening.
