The Duchess Bakes A Cake by Virginia Kahl
One day, the duchess, being bored, decides to bake a cake
A lovely light luscious delectable cake. Wouldn't that be a treat for everyone?
And she doesn't take the cook's advice. Leading to comic disaster.
Artwork is functional but doesn't work outside the story.

It's very much akin to “At Last the 1948 Show” - the book was originally conceived back in the day, what, 1965 or so, but one thing didn't lead to another… But in 2002 it suddenly cranked back up, they got the original artist to do the drawings (and he's held up just fine), and the result is just as surreal and daft and charming as ever.
