Growing Up under a Red Flag: A Memoir of Surviving the Chinese Cultural Revolution by Ying Chang Compestine

A memoir in picture book form. Not for very young children -- I would recommend knowing your child and being prepared for questions. It hits the elements a child would see, violence, her father's arrest and her mother's depression, denunciations, lack of food, burning things to hide them, and more.

Fairest of All: The Graphic Novel by Sarah Mlynowski

A lightsome fairy-tale twist. Jonah and Abbey investigate a mirror in the basement after a move, and find themselves in Snow-White's lands.

The Donkey Prince by M. Jean Craig

A prince is born, in best fairy-tale style, as a donkey. After growing up very princely with everyone noticing only that he does well for a donkey, he learns something and leaves, to look for more happiness.

Beauty and the Beast by Nancy Willard

This is border-line picture book, because it has a lot of text. The pictures aren't particularly striking, either.

But -- Beauty and Beast transposed to late 19th century New York. A lot of details, the text is used to expand nicely. Curse never gets any sort of veneer of explanation, though.

The Way Meat Loves Salt: A Cinderella Tale from the Jewish Tradition by Nina Jaffe

One of the other openings for the Cinderella tale. A rabbi cruelly drives his daughter away because she tell him she loves him as meat loves salt. . . .

Bits of local color for the tradition, but the same skeleton under it. Nice illustrations.

Ashpet: An Appalachian Tale by Joanne Compton

An American Cinderella variant, starting with her being the hired girl, and getting aid after being tested by a magical being. Shorter than some variants of this I have read. Illustrations are perfunctory.

Three Perfect Peaches: A French Folktale by Cynthia C. DeFelice and Mary De Marsh

A retelling of a fairy tale where the princess can only be cured by the peaches of the title, and the king balks at the promised reward when a poor youngest son succeeds.

Some nice illustrations

The Talking Eggs: A Folktale from the American South by Robert D. San Souci

A version of the kind and unkind girls from Louisanna, with the sweet and kind Blanche and the spoiled Rose. It starts out with Blanche giving an old woman a drink at a well, but then her mother and sister throw her out for being slow, and she stays at the old woman's very strange place, and it's that that Rose tries to emulate.

Julia's House Goes Home by Ben Hatke

Book 3.

The house is walking on odd wooden legs, and Julia sees a place to stop. Unfortunately, the house takes a tumble. Julia falls out. And on her walk after, discovers old friends who had also fallen, and more.

Lovely art. Excellent ending.

The Golden Mare, the Firebird, and the Magic Ring by Ruth Sanderson

A retelling of a classic fairy tale, if less known nowadays, with a few tweaks.  Alexi acquires a magical golden horse who gives him good advice, but the tsar resents the only Alexi can ride her.  When Alexi finds a firebird's feather and gives the tsar it, the tsar starts with demanding the firebird itself.

Gloriously illustrated.

Hansel and Gretel by Neil Gaiman

A faithful retelling of the Grimm tale -- first edition, so it's still the mother, not a stepmother.  With some developments -- such as a war to cause the famine.  A little flat in words, and the illustrations are only so-so.

Snowbear Whittington: An Appalachian Beauty and the Beast by William H. Hooks

A variant of East of the Sun, West of the Moon to be more precise, but then, that wouldn't be recognized.

Very good illustrations. Some motifs I haven't seen before in this tale type.

Helga's Dowry: A Troll Love Story by Tomie dePaola

A light-hearted tale of how Helga works out her problems from troll-law.

The Little Red Cat Who Ran Away and Learned His ABC's (the Hard Way) by Patrick McDonnell

An ABC book.  The letters are the only things on the pages as the cat slips out the door and finds himself pursued through the entire alphabet.  The reader has to work out the significance.

The Fortune-Tellers by Lloyd Alexander

A delightful little tale of some sillies and a man who discovers the trick of being a fortune-teller.

Cinderella by Ruth Sanderson

A lovely illustrated picture book version. The retelling combined elements from Perrault's and the Grimms'.

Beauty and the Beast by Mahlon F. Craft, illustrated by Kinuko Y. Craft

Of which the second is the important thing. The tale is the familiar one, and the illustrations are gorgeous. No bad notes in the lot.

Favorite Nursery Rhymes from Mother Goose by Scott Gustafson

Dozens of nursery rhymes, famous and not-quite-so famous. Quite good illustrations, of both humans and anthropomorphic animals.

Return by Aaron Becker

The triumphant conclusion of the trilogy! Yes, you do want to read the first books first to lead into this sweet wordless tale.

Again, the little girl can't get her father to play and so goes through the door to the wonder-world. This time, her father notices and follows. Her being unappeased is interrupted by the villains of the first two. Problems ensue, leading to an excellent conclusion.
