Whatever After in a Special Edition, out of the regular sequence. However, while the main sequence has an arc, and the installments range from no effect on it to quite some development, this one falls in the mild developments, like some of main ones. Reading in order might be wise.

Our narrator Abby has moved with her family to a new, small town. She disapproves of their weird practices such as how they make sandwiches with bananas and peanut butter. Then, one night, her little brother wakes her up because the mirror in the basement is hissing.
A prince is born, in best fairy-tale style, as a donkey. After growing up very princely with everyone noticing only that he does well for a donkey, he learns something and leaves, to look for more happiness.
An artful retelling of an old story. A quest to get grain -- in an era where the hero has a rifle -- and it's so clearly mythic that it works. Charming art.
