Valley So Low: Southern Mountain Stories by Manly Wade Wellman

A collection of uncanny tales. Some are Silver John. Some feature other men who wander about and know some of the matters -- each one with his tales grouped -- and it's clear that it's one continuity, with their loosely knowing each other, with Judge Pursuivant the sage old man of their knowledge. Others are people who get mixed up in such matters and may or may not escape.

One can see how he was listed in the Appendix N as a D&D source.

Very Good, Jeeves! by P.G. Wodehouse

Short stories of hijinks.

Comedies of resolving engagements. Dealing with kids, who are the usual Wodehouse brats. The martial life of Bingo Little. Once, Bertie is even in a romance that Jeeves has to deal with.

Carry On, Jeeves by P.G. Wodehouse

A collection of Jeeves stories.

Starting with the one where Bertie hires him, and is extracted from an unwise engagement against his will. More merry hijinks.

Skip the last, "Bertie Changes His Mind." Like Sherlock Holmes, Jeeves does not make a good viewpoint character.

The Inimitable Jeeves by P.G. Wodehouse

The second Jeeves book. Which actually means, in this case, that the characters have reached their full form.

A number of stories. Many about Bingo Little's disastrous love-life, gambling, or Bertie's incorrigible cousins Claude and Eustace. His aunt attempts to marry off Bertie a couple times and once he is even engaged, but Jeeves manages to handle those with the rest.

Tales From The Fermi Resolution: Vol. 2: Lights in the Darkness by Moe Lane

More tales from high-fantasy post-apocalyptical North America. Benefits from being read after the other Fermi Resolution books, I think.

Printed in the internal chronological order, fleshing out the history somewhat, though less than the first collection. Action -- adventures -- mysteries of Old America -- an interesting take on Omelas -- a tale of our hard-boiled detective Tom Vargas -- two adventures of Alkali Jones, the raider of old sites.

Odd Magics: Tales for the Lost by Sarah A. Hoyt

A number of lovely little retellings of fairy tales in the modern day. Sometimes with the magical elements all rationalized, but most are still fantasy.

Joyeuse Guard by Marion G. Harmon

book 9. Astra's been around a bit. Spoilers for the others ahead.

Tales From the Fermi Resolution: Vol. 1: Shadow of the Tower by Moe Lane

Further adventures from the world of Frozen Dreams Only one features a character from that one (the narrator), and they span centuries. They all stand alone, even two that are connected (albeit from quite different points of view) and the one connected to the novel.

Quiet Pine Trees by T.R. Darling

A collection of very short stories. Of various genres. A lot of time-travel, including a sequence about a time-traveling university. The horror section is more eerie than gory.

All Men Dream of Earthwomen and Other Aeons by John C. Wright

A collection of short stories.

Far-future humans -- cybernetics and genetic engineering -- drama and adventure -- time travel -- love stories -- and more.

"Soldier in Paradise" is set in the Golden Oecumene universe but the rest are stand-alones.

The Book of Feasts & Seasons by John C. Wright

A collection of short stories. Fantasy, SF, genre-blenders. Connected more or less loosely to holy days. Interesting ideas -- the stories are heavily philosophical.
marycatelli: (Reading Desk)
A sequence of photo-inspired vignettes, each one independent. A variety of moods but a certain tone connects them.

City Beyond Time: Tales of the Fall of Metachronopolis by John C. Wright

A collection of short stories, revolving about time travel.  With links, sometimes very faint.  Then, time travel and cause-and-effect have interesting relationships here.

The first and last are told in achronic order, which suits them well.  We have mysteries, attempts at rescue, and the effects of time travel and cause-and-effect on interactions.  A private investigator who observes that, in fact, a trenchcoat and fedora are normal attire where he comes from.  A widowed bum.  The fates of those whom the Time Wardens are no longer interested in but don't let leave.  And more.

In the Lamplight: The Fantastic Worlds of L. Jagi Lamplighter by L. Jagi Lamplighter

A varied collection of works. Some historical fantasy, some contemporary fantasy, some SF. One that, in the end, reveals itself to be mundane fiction.

I'm particularly fond of "Never Again the Same" and "Knight's Mate". Some are based in the same worlds as her other published works, but they stand alone.

Hoka

Hoka by Poul Anderson and Gordon R. Dickson

The continuing comic adventures of those amazing alien teddy bears who love playing out fiction, and Alex, still plenipotentiary, trying to cope.

Four stories here, longer than the first ones. We have a baseball episode, interstellar intrigue that the Hokas tackle like Foreign Service novels, a Jungle Book adventure with three aliens -- and Tanni instead of Alex, for once -- and a final grand adventure centering around a Hoka Napoleon.  For once, Alex actually has to explain that a Hoka can call himself Napoleon and still be sane.  By Hoka standards.  It even provides a resounding conclusion.

The Door in the Hedge by Robin McKinley

A collection of four stories, all in an exquisite enchanting prose style. She has the voice down pat, it can draw you in on its own.
