There I was, trudging up to the end of the story.

Then it stopped.

I looked at it. I knew what happened after the event I described. But I knew it wasn't part of this story.

I considered the possibility of sequels and jotted down notes. Ah, how the prospect cut down on a long denouement.

juggling ideas again

The problem with cutting out nifty ideas that don't work in the story as it comes together, and then putting them aside for the sequel, is that then you end up with an armful of slippery little ideas and have start getting them to come together.

Is it really more difficult than the first story was? I'm not sure, but I'll blame the sequel status for it. 0:)

one advantage of sequels

The ideas for a sequel to a WIP are appearing. A WIP that is still very much in the formation process.

The one advantage of this, I realize, is that I can use it as a clipping file for ideas that got cut from the WIP. Thus far everything fits.

Finished outlining my sequel to my Sleeping Beauty story -- set the century later, when she wakes up.

It's about the prince who is her cousin's great-grandson, not the one who wakes her up. Though it does affect him.

to end and begin

So I write. I write 200 antiwords, 700 words on the new pass. AND at 24,700 words, this draft is done! Woot!

And so I think, what should I write while that sits on the backburner for the pass for grammar and things?

So the muse says, remember that idea you left out? It's true, and it's going to be in her great-grandson's day. Outline another story!

It does seem to come together nicely. And it does distract.

one way to curb the denouement. . . .

With heroic effort, I remind myself that even if I know that the baby born at a stage in the story is going to marry one of the other babies (or children, there are a number of boys not so old that it would be unreasonable in a fairy tale), it's obviously not going to happen in the denouement.

Inspired by Beasts and Cursed Child -- the place to set up for sequels is not in the end of a story, but in the middle. Not always by planting problems. Another approach is planting world-building to not only show that the world is wide, but that there are other problems. Or have been.

Series can be divvied up by how tightly connected they are. They can also be divvied up by how formulaic they are. Which is not in itself a bad thing. It can produce a difference like a poet's book titled Poems, and one titled Sonnets.
