Amazing what reading a lot will do.

The Spartans, unlike the rest of the Greeks, did not have a notable cult of Demeter and Dionysus -- apparently because cultivating the grape and grain was helot work.

The two largest witch hunts on record were held in the Roman Republic.

Switzerland is noted for its watches and clocks because of John Calvin.  His sumptorary laws had Swiss jewelers scrambling for something they could do for a living instead, and being useful, watches could use their fine metalworking skills and still be sold.

Postman in Victorian England had a special double knock by which they alerted the housemaid that mail, not a guest, had arrived so she didn't have to rush to the door, she could pick it up at leisure.
