slithering in the explanations
Feb. 14th, 2021 09:36 pmFinding places to explain why the children of royalty and nobility do not play with the children of servants, even when they are very young: because you have to stop the friendships entirely at a relatively young age.

cast of thousands
Jul. 18th, 2020 11:42 pmWas pondering a woman who will appear only in the denouement, and how she can cover up her anomalous situation. The thing about secret marriages is that they have to be kept secret, and she's upper-crust enough that it's being a city is not cover enough in itself.

fairy tales, kings, and succession
Sep. 19th, 2016 09:08 pmWas just about settled on partible inheritance for fairy tale kingdoms -- not only does it fit the fairy tales where there are kings who are brothers, it also helps split up the kingdoms after an only daughter princess marries an only son prince -- and if it would result in kingdoms the size of postage stamps, well, that would explain why a princess who sets out to seek her fortune can easily walk to the next one and get a job as a scullery maid.

Mesalliance
Jun. 22nd, 2016 11:24 pmI have noticed recently one bit of flawed but frequent world-building: people underestimating how little social distance is needed to create views of "Mesalliance!"

ah, what to wear
May. 29th, 2016 10:11 pmWhat does a proper young lady wear when she goes for a walk, and suspects there may be a real danger of being pixy-led? Which would necessitate her turning an article of clothing inside out to escape?

Was further pondering the problems of fully adult characters as the protagonist of fantasy adventures. . . .
There are the professionals. People whose jobs are adventures. . . the canonical heroes of sword and sorcery, to be sure. . . but there are issues even with traveling mercenaries.
